1960’s laminex glass fronted cabinet, broken crystalware, broken and reworked porcelain figurines, plastic frame, stuffed toy, LED lights.
1 metre high x 92cm wide x 28cm deep, 2017
Glass fronted cabinets traditionally sit in the living room with all the best family china and crystal on show. The display puts on a good front. This cabinet is a bit different. The family crystal lies in a beautiful broken carpet at its base. The china figurines on display have been broken and reconstructed into disturbing new creatures, half benign, half malevolent. A child’s favourite toy lies abandoned on the ground. This installation tells a story of broken and distorted memories, the result of family breakdown. Joseph Cornell’s box dioramas inspired this work.
