Process
Jane is interested in finding fresh ways of interpreting scientific data from the natural world by offering an audience the experience of a non-human body through its senses. Until recently her art making process has varied greatly depending on the idea but charcoal drawing is usually involved at some stage, either as a field research tool or in its material application as an embodiment of deep time.
Jane’s traditional background in sculpture is currently being applied in a new way to make a large moveable model (scale 1:12) of a bull ant which will feature in upcoming film work.
For her PhD project, Jane combines drawing and sculpture with macro film and photography to describe an ant’s lived experience, based on recent findings that eco-anxiety can be reduced by experiencing slow, detailed nature-based artworks. These processes may later be integrated with XR/VR to benefit from larger scale to potentially deepen connection, understanding and experience of the more-than-human.
